Casal ‘wasn’t earning that spot’

D.C. United made yet another roster move, releasing midfielder Kasali Yinka Casal on Monday. The 19-year-old Nigerian, who earned an assist in United’s first game of the season but hasn’t improved since, vacates one of the team’s senior roster spots. He rejected a pay cut and move to the team’s developmental roster.

“He wasn’t earning that spot, and we want to keep that spot available if we want to do anything later,” said United technical director Dave Kasper.

MLS contracts became guaranteed for the rest of the season on July 1.

United, which released John Wilson and re-signed Dominic Mediate last week, will meet up with its newest acquisition, defender Greg Vanney, today in Kansas City.

“One of the attractive things about Greg is his experience and his ability to organize,” said United head coach Tom Soehn. “We’ve lacked a little bit of that — a veteran guy in the back that is going to make our shape better.”

“We really felt like if we added a veteran — obviously him being an American helps — it was important,” added Soehn, hinting at United’s ability to sign another international player, should it look to do so, in the current transfer window.
