Coles emerges as Jets’ leader

Laveranues Coles didn’t make his feelings known in Washington. In fact, after a while, he didn’t make much of anything known; he stopped talking to the media midway through his last season in Washington.

But, in New York, he’s been voted a captain.

“He’s a great guy,” Jets coach Eric Mangini said. “He’s one of those guys that you call when you are stranded at the airport and he will come get you. His toughness, his competitiveness; I just can’t say enough good things about him.”

The Redskins shipped Coles to New York in exchange for Santana Moss after the 2004 season, Joe Gibbs’ first in his return. Coles was upset about his role in the offense under Gibbs. Though he caught 90 passes, he scored just one touchdown.

Since the trade,Coles has caught 206 passes for 2,416 yards and 17 touchdowns and hasn’t missed a game. With Washington, Moss has 159 receptions for 2,521 yards and 15 touchdowns.

This season, Coles has 42 catches for 473 yards and six touchdowns. He suffered a concussion Sunday and did not practice Wednesday.

“You didn’t like for that to happen,” Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said of Coles’ displeasure here, “but it’s worked out good for both teams. I know it’s worked out good for us.”
