He likes what he’s seen in the film rooms and the preparation away from the field. John Beck’s work ethic is hard to miss. And Kyle Shanahan likes what he sees.
“As far as his attention to detail and everything he does, he’s the type of guy I have to tell him to leave me alone,” said the Redskins offensive coordinator. “He does as much as he possibly can. It’s the first day out there and I don’t have to correct him on anything.
“That’s what everyone wants. That’s what you need. You look at all those top guys in the league, you start with Brady, Manning and then go to Brees and those other players. You tell me which one of those guys doesn’t have an A type personality that demands perfection. The guys who are like that usually are good.”
But that doesn’t mean Shanahan is ready to hand the starting job to Beck. Shanahan said he still anticipates Rex Grossman signing a contract and eventually reporting to camp. Grossman has not yet agreed to a deal, but even if he signs today the earliest he can practice is Aug. 4.
And when Grossman reports, he and Beck will compete for the starting job.
“The competition will take a while,” Shanahan said. “We haven’t been able to evaluate them through OTAs and stuff…. We’ll make sure we give both those guys a chance and see what comes up.”
Shanahan, like his father, was high on Beck when he came out of BYU in 2007. He said nothing that they saw on film from his rookie season, or anything they saw in practice last year changed their opinion.
However, he also knows Beck has a lot to prove.
“The jury’s still out,” Shanahan said. “But the guy’s a second-round pick and the guy should get a chance.”
But Shanahan’s dad, and boss, is confident with what they have at quarterback. He likes that both Grossman and Beck know the system.
“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” he said. “I’m putting my reputation on these guys that they can play.”
And he saw it in the first practice, with Beck.
“I don’t want to put him in the Pro Bowl yet, but he’s close,” Shanahan said.
Then he added: “That’s a joke.”
We’ll soon see who gets the last laugh in this competition.
