On Monday, Cheers & Jeers spoke with former D.C. United head coach Peter Nowak, who is making his D.C. debut this weekend as the U.S. national team assistant.
On Tuesday, the bulk of the U.S. team practiced together for the first time in preparation for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Cuba, including still-a-teen Freddy Adu, who is now a member of French club AS Monaco and said training at RFK Stadium brought back memories.
Yeesh.
“It’s not everyday that 19-year-olds get a chance to play in a World Cup qualifier so it’s definitely a big honor,” said Adu.
Meanwhile, there was also former D.C. United goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who left Washington for Norwegian club Valerenga last offseason and couldn’t have picked a better place for his second U.S. national soccer team camp.
“It was really cool,” said Perkins of receiving his plane ticket to D.C. “When I saw that, I was really excited.”
Olney native Oguchi Onyewu is expected to anchor the U.S. defense and draw a sizeable following this weekend, while Maryland men’s soccer coach Sasho Cirovski even dropped in on practice to spy on former Terps Maurice Edu and Danny Califf.
