With the advent of the lockout, the exodus of NBA free agents across the Atlantic Ocean has begun. It’s safe to say many of them may have been headed there eventually anyway.
After two lackluster seasons in Detroit since being selected in the second round of the 2009 draft, former Georgetown forward DaJuan Summers signed with Montepaschi Siena in Italy’s top league. Summers averaged 3.2 points and less than a rebound a game with the Pistons, who drafted him out of a job two weeks ago by selecting Duke’s Kyle Singler.
If Summers had stayed two more years with the Hoyas, it’s not out of the question he could have been a first-round pick two weeks ago.
Former Wizards center Hilton Armstrong signed with ASVEL in Lyon-Villeurbanne, France. A year ago, he was agreeing to come to Washington, the fourth of the five cities he has called home over the last two years. The paycheck in Europe might not be as attractive, but the job security could be the best Armstrong has had since being drafted in the first round out of Connecticut in 2006.
