Studs and Duds

Not a whole lot to measure considering they weren’t in full pads this morning. But there was enough that went on during one-on-one situations that was a little revealing.

Studs

CB DeAngelo Hall. Love watching him break on the ball; he takes such good angles to the ball and comes through the receivers with strength. Hall intercepted a Chase Daniel pass to Malcolm Kelly during seven-on-seven work. Earlier he broke up a Jason Campbell pass to Kelly with a tight jam and physical coverage in the slot. It prevented Kelly from using his size against him as Hall came down hard on his arms when the ball arrived, breaking up the pass.

WR Antwaan Randle El. Toasted Byron Westbrook on a go-route, getting Westbrook to bite on a half step to the outside. Give Westbrook credit; after the play he was quizzing Randle El on the route. Randle El made a nice diving catch in the seven-on-seven, albeit for a short gain. He also beat Hall downfield from the slot position (not holding it against Hall).

CB Justin Tryon. Yes, he was bad the other night, but he rebounded nicely today. Broke up a pass to Fred Davis. Made a nice last-second breakup of a deep ball to Devin Thomas in one-on-one work. Was fairly consistent with his coverage.

Duds

CB Kevin Barnes. Had a tough day in one-on-one, getting beaten by Marko Mitchell on a deep ball. Did have a nice, aggressive break on a comeback.

QB Chase Daniel. Was picked off on consecutive passes during one-on-one drills.  Hall got him first, then Westbrook got him next.

WR Devin Thomas. Didn’t really do a whole lot wrong and maybe he shouldn’t be penalized for this, but had trouble coming out of his breaks as he slipped a couple times. (Other guys did too, but it seemed Thomas had a little more trouble with this). Had one pass to him that was a bit high, but went off his fingers. Would have been a nice grab.

Play of the day

In one-on-one work, Kelly got the best of Hall on one play. Running a go-route, Kelly got a step past Hall who managed to close that gap. But Jason Campbell threw a perfect pass and Kelly made a good grab just over Hall’s outstretched arms. Clearly, Kelly’s 6-foot-4 frame helped on this 40-yard play. After the play, Hall yelled to Kelly, ”Good catch, Malcolm!” The guy just likes to be out there competing. Yes, we still listed Hall on the stud list after this play and the one to Randle El. He was that good on others.
