Yorktown’s cinderalla run comes to an end

It was not the way Yorktown’s girls lacrosse team wanted things to end, one step shy of a spot in the inaugural Group AAA state tournament.

The Patriots had spent so much time and effort into shocking the rest of the Northern Region with their play this postseason and a state tournament berth would have been the perfect cap to a phenomenal season.

But all of that postseason magic that allowed Yorktown to beat Chantilly and W.T. Woodson in region tournament games earlier this month was missing in Wednesday’s region consolation game against Loudoun Valley, a 9-6 loss.

The Vikings scored the first seven goals of the game and were in control throughout the second half.

The Patriots, who lost 15-8 to Oakton in the region semifinals, finished with a 16-4 record, setting the program record for wins in the process. They upset two-time defending region champion Woodson in the quarterfinals and beat Loudoun Valley twice, including in the National District championship game.

“No one wants to lose in the playoffs, but I think our girls know how far they’ve come this year,” said Yorktown coach Robin Steinberg, whose team will likely return 19 players next season. “We have a lot to look forward to now.”
