VSGA honors Northern Va. women’s trio

Steinhagen, Hoffman, Savage take player of the year awards

Three Northern Virginia women’s golfers have received player of the year awards from the Virginia State Golf Association. Amanda Steinhagen (Oak Hill) is the VSGA women’s player of the year. Mimi Hoffman (Springfield) and Shelley Savage (Alexandria) share the senior women’s award. Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield), 15, is the junior player of the year.

Steinhagen, a 19-year-old sophomore at Longwood, won her second straight Virginia Women’s Amateur. The Oakton graduate also placed third in the Virginia Women’s Stroke Play. She was the Virginia Women’s Division Junior player of the year in 2010, when she became the first player in 30 years to hold both the women’s state amateur and junior titles.

Hoffman won the Virginia Senior Women’s Amateur title for the second time, edging Savage 2-and-1 at the Homestead. Hoffman, a member at Belle Haven, also placed second in the Virginia Senior Women’s Stroke Play and the Dixie Senior Women’s Amateur.

Savage won the Virginia Senior Women’s Stroke Play for an unprecedented fourth time, rallying for a one-stroke victory at Mount Vernon Country Club. She is a retired Navy nurse.
