Trade to Pirates changes Milledge

Apparently, landing in Pittsburgh caused Lastings Milledge to do a little thinking. And he thought he needed to change.

Guess the problems he ran into with Washington, getting demoted to AAA last April and the fact that he had already been traded once hadn’t caused such introspection. But going to the Pirates has done that. How nice.

“It’s kind of changed my life a little bit, changed the way I carry myself and changed the way I go about my business,” Milledge told Pirate beat reporters. “I knew I really had to buckle down and just overall be a better person, and it’s just jump-started my career.”

Milledge was touted as a five-tool player long ago. But he hasn’t done much to live up to the hype. However, in Pittsburgh he raised his average from .167 to .279 with four homers and 20 RBI in 220 at-bats. Not All-Star material, but a start. Of course, the Nats are better off with Nyjer Morgan than another headache such as Milledge. Let Pittsburgh see if he’s really changed.

“It feels so good to be looked at as a different person. I had my [negative] articles, I had my downfalls,” he said. “But it’s just so good for people to look at Lastings Milledge as me. It’s just a relief for me because my family and my friends know who I am, so it’s just a relief that people look at you for you and not make any speculation.”
