Saum and the Eagles are making noise in more than just the Big South Conference.
Fresh off moving up two places in this week’s Baseball America Top 25 poll to No. 23, the Eagles (30-10) are poised to make another jump after a 6-3 upset win over No. 6 Clemson on Tuesday.
Saum went 2-for-4 against the Tigers, including a double to drive in senior designated hitter Ben Ehrlich in the top of the sixth inning. Improving his season batting average to .306, the sophomore third baseman has hit successfully in Winthrop’s last five games (9 for 21), including three home runs, two doubles and 11 RBIs. He is fifth on the Eagles’ roster with 23 RBIs for the season.
As a senior at Riverdale Baptist, Saum batted .406 with five homers, 10 doubles and 42 RBI.
