The stories of the NCAA Tournament are Northern Iowa and St. Mary’s. Oops, we forgot about Cornell — apparently Wisconsin did, too. The Big Red might be one of the scariest teams to play right now and could pull off a Final Four run, ala George Mason.
But those are the best stories, not the best teams. After one weekend — and after Kansas was knocked out — a handful of teams separated themselves. If all is clicking for these teams, they’ll beat anyone else not on this list.

Kentucky
The Wildcats have the most impressive talent in the tournament. If they continue to mature while winning by big margins, it’ll be a race for second place in the tourney. The Wildcats have had little opposition, winning the first two games by a combined 59 points. If they get hot outside, from the 3-point line in particular, they’re nearly unbeatable.
After losing by 30 to Kentucky on Saturday night, Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio said, “I’ve been in the ACC 10 years. That’s as good a basketball team as we’ve played against in the 10 years I’ve been here.”
He has faced four national champions in that time. Note to tourney: Watch out.
Syracuse
Listen, if Andy Rautins is draining 3s all game, the Orange will be tough for anyone to beat. Isn’t that right, Gonzaga? Rautins is a terrific guard who can get exceptionally hot. Wesley Johnson has dominated inside. Oh, and they could be strengthened this weekend if 6-foot-9 Arinze Onuaku returns from a quadriceps injury.
The Orange have won their first two games by a combined 45 points.
Kansas State
The one team that gave the Wildcats problems all season — Kansas — is done. Now their fans don’t have to worry about a fourth loss to the Jayhawks. And the way they’re playing, they won’t have to worry about losing for a while. OK, maybe in the Elite Eight where they likely would play Syracuse.
K-State is dangerous when its backcourt of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente has good games. Pullen scored 34 vs. BYU on Saturday. But it’s the Wildcats’ dominance on the boards that could lead them far.
