A true reason for college bragging rights

There is a brand new award that really rewards colleges for their commitment to sports both in men’s and women’s athletics.

Capital One Cup, which will be awarded to the top men’s and women’s Division I programs based on cumulative on-field performance across multiple sports. Colleges will earn points based on their teams’ top-10 finishes and in final official coaches’ polls in 13 men’s and women’s sports, including cross-country, golf and tennis for men, and volleyball, softball and rowing for women.

ESPN anchor Rece Davis, who is a member of the Advisory Board told me:”As some who loves college sports I really think that we have a true award that embraces all aspects of the total spectrum. It is not just about being good in the marquee sports like college football or men’s and women’s basketball this is about being solid in all areas of a schools athletic program.”

In conversation with fellow Advisory Board member Doug Fluite he was also excited about the project:“This will be an opportunity for school administrators to see the importance of their non-revenue programs. For years those of us who love college sports have followed every sport offered on both the men’s and women’s side but now bragging rights come to the school with truly the best athletic program in the country and that is as it should be.”

The final standings will be released at the end of the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons. In July, the two athletic programs with the highest aggregated point totals will be announced as winners. Each university will be presented with a trophy, along with a $200,000 scholarship donation from Capital One, at the ESPY Awards.
