Moss: Grossman deserves to start

Redskins receiver Santana Moss knows who he wants starting at quarterback. He made it clear he has confidence in both Rex Grossman and John Beck. But Moss made it more than clear that no change should be made.

Grossman should remain the starter, even after throwing four interceptions in Sunday’s 20-13 loss to Philadelphia.

“That’s something that shouldn’t even be asked,” Moss said. “He deserves another shot. [Michael]Vick threw four picks last week and came back and played a hell of a game this week. Tom Brady threw four two weeks ago. I feel for the flow of the game yesterday it worked. It got a spark by bringing [John] Beck in. That’s the luxury when you have two good quarterbacks. Beck can come in and do his thing when you need him, but I feel like you can’t give up on a guy because he had a bad outing.”

Grossman has turned the ball over 18 times in his eight starts with Washington, including 11 turnovers this season – nine interceptions and two fumbles. He’s thrown just six touchdown passes.

“It happens, you throw picks, you fumble balls,” Moss said. “We have to give Grossman a better chance to come up with some of those balls. You can’t put it on him. Yes he threw the ball. Yes he’s the guy that will get blamed. Yes it’s his decision, but we have to make better plays for him so he won’t have to deal with this type of stuff.”

Others in the locker room including Jabar Gaffney said Grossman should remain the starter. They all say no matter what happens their job is to just go play and players expressed confidence in Beck as well. But Moss delivered a passionate defense of Grossman, with whom he shares an agent (Drew Rosenhaus).

“You just got give the man a shot,” Moss said. “If he don’t deserve it, we all would know. But you can’t go back further than [Sunday] and say well he didn’t give us a shot. We won those games. We lost one game before yesterday. You have to give the guy a shot. If he doesn’t succeed, do what needs to be done.”

There’s another reason Moss wants Grossman to keep the job.

“You don’t want to be given up on like that as a player,” Moss said. “That’s all I can say. If you’re the guy in that shoes, would you want to be given up on because you had a bad outing? No. Therefore, that’s why I feel the way I feel.”
