This one was for Brooksen McGinn.
The newborn child of Dulaney head coach Tina McGinn might not be a typical good luck charm, but Brooksen might play the role of inspiration for the 2006 Lions team.
Brooksen was born on May 4, and since then, the Lions have been on a trek to bring home another state title.
Dulaney (15-2) took another step towards defending the team?s 4A/3A crown Wednesday with a South Regional championship win over North County (3-12) at Dulaney High School in Timonium.
“I was with the team last year. I was an assistant, and I?m kind of the interim head coach,” said Kristi Korrow, who added “It?s been fun” taking over for McGinn since the birth of Brooksen.
The Knights were on a two-game winning streak after a 1-11 regular season.
The Lions roared out to a 10-1 halftime advantage, behind three goals from junior midfielder Kaitlyn Horsman.
There was no looking back from there, as Dulaney used a 10-goal scoring streak sandwiched around halftime.
“The thing I love most about them is how much they play as a team,” Korrow said. “They are very unselfish. One of the stats I always look for to tell them is how many scorers we have in a game. And they really pride themselves on that.”
At the end of the day, eight of Dulaney?s 20 players scored.
To this point, the defending region and state champions have toppled C. Milton Wright and Glen Burnie after coming into the postseason as the region?s top seeded squad.
Korrow said that it?s going to take more of the same close-knit teamwork to defend the Lions? title.
“It?s really going to take them bringing everything together,” she said. “They need to continue to play as a unit, not looking to rely on one or two people.”
