Denver’s Lawson starting to heat up

Denver wasn’t supposed to win without Carmelo Anthony, and Ty Lawson isn’t a good 3-point shooter. The first statement was disproved weeks ago. The second? Lawson buried that one Saturday night.

That’s not to say the Clinton, Md., native suddenly has become Ray Allen. But it’s sort of hard to do what he did Saturday without having some sort of a shot. Lawson set an NBA record when he made his first 10 3-point shots, missing only his 11th — and final — attempt.

“Every time I threw it, it went in except for that last one,” Lawson told reporters afterward. “Even that last one I missed, I thought that one was going in.”

In 29 starts this season, Lawson has averaged 15.0 points and 6.8 assists a game. His field goal shooting has improved slightly, but his 3-point accuracy has been markedly better, going from 36.5 percent as a sub to 45.1 as a starter. Not coincidentally, in the last 23 games since the Anthony trade Denver is 17-6.
