Now we know what can cause large NFL players, some of whom had just finished talking about blowing up other players with big hits or blocks, to squirm just a bit.
A 10-inch snake.
That became evident during the open locker-room session today, when the skinny snake slithered along the baseboard, just underneath the lockers of Chris Wilson and Malcolm Kelly. Nobody panicked or ran out of the room, but lots of chatter ensued mostly among a small group of players (it came near the end of the session, so only several players were around).
“Somebody do something!” linebacker Chris Wilson said.
Stephon Heyer made several attempts to pick it up and carry it outside, though Mike Sellers chastised him because, “You don’t know if it’s poisonous!” Chris Samuels made the same point.
But Heyer managed to pick it up (it fell to the ground once and coiled up) and took it outside, gently setting it on the ground and letting it free. Wilson later called him the Stephon the Crocodile Hunter.
No idea how the snake got in the facility, but the facility is in rural Virginia surrounded by woods. It makes sense that it would happen at some point.
However, that did not end the conversation. Wilson and Kelly spent the next several minutes wondering how it got into the facility; Heyer let them know the snake had no teeth and wasn’t poisonous (looked like your basic garden variety snake anyway). Lots of jokes, too. But Wilson punctuated his thoughts by saying, “That’s why I live in Michigan; there’s nothing poisonous in Michigan. It’s too cold.”
