With an immaculate final round of 7-under-par 65, Bobby Morris of Great Falls survived 100-degree heat and shot his age, obliterating the field in the Middle Atlantic Senior Amateur Tuesday at Bulle Rock.
Morris (75-65 – 140), a founder and executive at Billy Casper Golf, came from five shots down to finish seven shots clear of runner-up and first-round leader Barry Flaer (70-77 – 147) of Adamstown, Md.
In hitting every fairway and every green on the course which was set up at 6,555 yards, Morris bested the competitive course record of 66 set by longtime region club pro Chip Sullivan. Morris also completed a local grand slam of sorts. He already had captured the senior amateur titles of Virginia (2007), Maryland (2006, 2007, 2011), and D.C (2005).
Holing a flop shot from just off the green at the par-5 second hole, Morris jump-started his round with an eagle. On the back nine, Morris’ ball-striking was extraordinary as he made four birdies, none from longer than five feet.
“There were no mistakes. I could not have shot any worse,” Morris told John Stewart of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association. “Actually this round wasn’t much different from the first one except I was not familiar with the course and didn’t want to take any chances.”
