Assigning grades for signing day

Ken Beatrice, the infamous Godfather of sports talk radio in Washington, used to say, “I don’t have the resources to scout high school ball.” Well, we don’t either. But here’s our attempt to grade the winners and losers, among local college football teams, on signing day.

Maryland
Considering last year’s record (2-10) and the attending coaching turmoil, the Terrapins landed four 4-star prospects (rivals.com), an intriguing quarterback and upgraded its speed.

» QB Tyler Smith (6-4, 200) from Easton, Pa. is said to have the arm and the intangibles.

Virginia Tech
The Hokies got commitments from four 4-star prospects. Coach Frank Beamer concentrated on upgrading both lines, landing seven players who weigh between 275-300 pounds.

One to watch » DE Justin Taylor (6-4, 220) from Stanly, N.C., is a project with more basketball experience than football. But he and finished product Zack McCray (6-5, 235) could be a dominant pass-rushing duo by 2011.

Virginia

It could have been worse. With a coaching change from Al Groh to Mike London, it was surprising the Cavaliers retained as many recruits as they did and a good omen for London’s future recruiting efforts.
