Ted Kennedys status as an icon for the left and a lightning rod for Republicans even trickles down to local government.

A Yeas & Nays source tells us of a “push poll” he received regarding Republican D.C. Councilwoman Carol Schwartz, who is up for re-election this year.

The call accused Schwartz of stealing her legislation on employee sick leave from the Massachusetts senator.

The pollster also asked such leading questions as: “Do you support Mayor Fenty’s broad school reform package or do you support Schwartz?”

Paul Craney, executive director of the D.C. Republican Committee, told us, “D.C. voters are not asking for negative and dishonest push polls, rather solutions to everyday problems. Hiding behind negative attacks clearly demonstrates a candidate’s limitation on good, smart and sound policies for the District of Columbia.”

But Adam Clampitt, an independent who is running against Schwartz, said, “I can assure you that my campaign had nothing to do with it. I hope that soon we will retire the politics of the past and make D.C. government work for the people again.”
