Bad break for Baer, McDaniel

McDaniel has needed to catch a break all season. But not this kind.

Starting senior quarterback Brad Baer broke his right leg at practice this week and may be out for the rest of the season, Coach Tim Keating said.

Senior quarterback Tom Wenrich ? the team?s punter ? replaced Baer in McDaniel?s 37-20 loss to Dickinson on Saturday, which dropped the Green Terror to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference. Conference-leading Dickinson improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Wenrich completed 15-of-38 passes for 152 yards, but threw three interceptions. His last start prior to Saturday was the 2005 season finale against Johns Hopkins, a game the Blue Jays won, 14-5.

“Tom Wenrich played fairly well under the circumstances,” Keating said.

Wenrich, who replaced Baer late in two lopsided losses earlier this month, has completed 34-of-69 passes for 332 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions this season.

The injury also means Baer is unlikely to become the second quarterback in conference history to have 4,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in a career. Former Green Terror quarterback Ron Sermarini, who played from 1997 to 2000, is the only player to accomplish the feat. Baer is 289 passing yards shy of reaching the milestone.

McDaniel will host Juniata (0-3, 0-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m., as the Green Terror remains in search of its first victory of the year and 500th all-time?a mark reached by just 23 Division III teams.

“I think we played real hard Saturday, we just didn?t make plays,” Keating said. “We are trying to accentuate the positives.”
