Williams optimistic about Sunday

Redskins left tackle Trent Williams didn’t want to put a percentage on his chances for playing Friday. But the strong statements he made should let you know what he thinks. And, for what it’s worth, he said if he did put a percentage on it, it would be “close to 100.”

“I’ll be out there,” said Williams, who missed the past two games with knee and toe injuries on his left foot. “Since I practiced all week, I’m pretty sure I’m going to play.”

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is not ready to proclaim Williams as definite for Sunday’s game vs. Green Bay. But he is optimistic.

“If there’s no setback, he’ll be ready to go,” Shanahan said. “He’s had a pretty good week.”

Considering Green Bay’s pass rush — the Packers have 16 sacks and linebacker Clay Matthews, Jr., has seven. Matthews, though, is moved around quite a bit and more often than not rushes from the left side, pitting him vs. right tackle Jammal Brown.

Still, Williams’ return is a boost to the offense. Stephon Heyer filled in the past two games, but had problems with critical penalties in the second half of games. Overall, Heyer drew five penalties in the two games.
