Former Redskins QB Doug Williams is in the hunt to be the next head coach at the University of South Florida. Williams who is now a member of the Bucs front office would love to return to college coaching and snagging the Bulls job would be a good fit for him.
Williams was a head coach at Grambling State University. from 1998-2003 before joining the Bucs front office.
The job is not as hot as the opening at Tennessee however it is attracting some big names and Williams is on a list that includes East Carolina boss Skip Holtz who many feel is the favorite. Speaking of the Vols another man on the Bulls short list is former Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer, Michigan offensive coordinator Calvin Magee, Florida assistant Dan McCarney, Houston coach Kevin Sumlin and Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora.
AD Doug Woolard has asked Tampa resident and former NFL head coach Tony Dungy to help find a coach from the pro ranks.
USF has also hired the same search firm that brought Pete Carroll to USC and Urban Meyer to Florida to help them find a top notch replacement for ousted coach Jim Leavitt.
Leavitt was let go for allegedly striking a player during a game, a charge that he denies and he is presently going to court against USF to get his job back.
Under Leavitt who has built the team from scratch in 1995 – the team has gone 94-57 and has played in a bowl game every year since entering the Big East in 2005.
