Mystics aim to build on strong start

The Washington Mystics (1-0) hope to take their winning ways on the road Thursday as they take on the Charlotte Sting (0-2).

The Mystics, who swept last year’s season series with Charlotte, opened the season Tuesday night with an impressive 95-60 win over the New York Liberty. And while Mystics coach Richie Adubato was happy with his team’s win, he doesn’t want the team to lose focus on the bigger picture.

“It was very good for the start,” Adubato said. “But it is only one win; we’ve got a long way to go.”

All-Star guard Alana Beard, whose 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting were instrumental to the team’s victory, echoed her coach’s sentiment, saying that the team can’t get complacent even after a big win.

“We have to keep our focus,” Beard said. “You know, we can take this game away and say ‘Oh, we played great’ but you can go back and look at the tape and find your flaws.”

Mystics forward DeLisha Milton-Jones said the team plans to execute a similar game plan in Charlotte with an emphasis on rebounding and defense.

“Going into Charlotte what we’re looking to do is really execute, play tremendous defense, and rebound,” Milton-Jones said. “And if we can do that we’ll get the win.”
