Gascon has many issues with Arizona law

In case you didn’t hear, police Chief George Gascon has more than one problem with a new Arizona law that requires local police to don the hat of an immigration officer.

The “extremely draconian” and “ill-conceived” law is problematic, the former Mesa, Ariz., police chief said Wednesday. Gascon added that it is unconstitutional, it will drain resources and it will take away from community policing.

As far as Mayor Gavin Newsom’s ban on official travel to Arizona, however, he doesn’t see that as problem for the Police Department.

“Certainly, we have a directive from the mayor and we’re gong to follow it,” Gascon said. “But it’s not like we do a lot of conferences in Arizona.”
