Carley Glass sat at the McCormick Unsung Heroes Awards Banquet in Hunt Valley and couldn?t believe her ears as the female recipient of the $30,000 scholarship was announced.
“I was surprised,” Glass said. “I didn?t think that it was going to be me. I was very surprised.”
Her parents were in disbelief, too, but they knew exactly who the award was going to as their daughter was being described.
“When they started talking about the 5-foot-3 sixth man, that?s when I started to get a little nervous,” Carley?s father Michael said. Glass recently finished up her senior year at Pikesville, where she played forward for her basketball team.
“Our team was pretty small, we only had one tall girl,” Glass said. “Coach moved me to forward, and at first I was kind of [hesitant] about it. But I knew it had to get done.”
The McCormick Award was definitely fitting for the undersized senior, who gave up her role as the potential team leader in scoring. “She deserves it,” Glass? mother Gina said. “She?s such a giving person, that?s just the way she is.”
Carley?s twin sister, Maryanne, is routinely an offensive force on the athletic field. According to her parents, “Carley has always settled” for an unsung role.
“It?s good because we have competition, so she makes me want to play harder,” Carley Glass said of her sister, who was Pikesville?s point guard. “If I got down she was there to motivate me, and vice versa.”
Her dedication has paid off. With the scholarship in tow, Glass will take her team-first approach to Division III Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
Involvement in sports has played a key role in Glass? youth, and she plans to continue that beyond college. She is unsure what she?d like to pursue as a major, but she said she?ll likely start out in business.
One thing?s for sure. At 5-3, she won?t be lining up at power forward for the Chestnut Hill team.
“I?ll probably play guard,” she said with a smile.
