U.S. women to face familiar opponents in Summer Olympics

The U.S. women’s national team will face three teams that it played in last summer’s 2011 World Cup during the group stage of the Summer Olympics in July and August. The draws for the men’s and women’s tournaments took place on Tuesday in London.

The U.S. faced both Colombia and North Korea in the group stage in Germany last year, and it’ll do so again this summer after opening the tournament with a rematch of the 2011 Women’s World Cup semifinals against France.

The Americans prevailed against the French, 3-1, while shutting out the Colombians, 3-0, and North Koreans, 2-0.

Here’s where the U.S. group stage matches will be played: Wednesday, July 25, 12:00 p.m.; United States vs. France at Hampden Park, Glasgow; Saturday, July 28, 12:00 p.m.: United States vs. Colombia at Hampden Park, Glasgow; Tuesday, July 31, 12:15 p.m.: United States vs. North Korea at Old Trafford, Manchester

The quarterfinals are Friday, August 3; the semifinals are Monday, August 6; and the medal games are Thursday, August 9.

On the men’s side, D.C. United midfielder Andy Najar and Honduras avoided being drawn against host Great Britain but will face a big test against Spain on July 29 in Newcastle in order to reach the knockout stage. The full match schedule can be found here.
