Second quarter review

Halftime score: Redskins 10, Panthers 2

1st Qtr | 2nd Qtr | 3rd Qtr | 4th Qtr

» The linebackers came through with some excellent hits and tackles in the second quarter, starting with Rocky McIntosh at the goal-line, forcing the fumble. What a nice job by the defense in that spot – why they ran at Albert Haynesworth is beyond me. But the defense is saving this game for Washington. Looks like a Joe Gibbs II game. All they need is Mark Brunell to return.

» Nice block, Stephon Heyer, on the safety. Just got shoved back by Julius Peppers. The guy lacks the necessary strength to be an effective right tackle.

» The Redskins wisely are giving D’Anthony Batiste more help. And give Jason Campbell credit. Despite the issues up front, he’s not letting it affect him yet. Last week he felt everything. This week, he’s staying strong in the pocket.

» Some things don’t change: Fred Davis can’t block. Got whipped to the ground on one short Clinton Portis run. He seems to get off-balance when he reaches and that gets him into trouble.

» The Redskins do not appear to be shying away from longer routes just because of the line.

» Stephon Heyer and D’Anthony Batiste allowed too much pressure on the failed screen pass. Yes, they should allow penetration, but Jason Campbell was pinched too soon and the play had no chance.

» Jake Delhomme does not look like he’ll threaten the Redskins at all.
