Second chances at Morgan State

College football players who transfer between 1-A schools are required to sit out a year. However, if they transfer to a 1-AA program, they can play immediately. One of the 1-AA schools taking advantage is Morgan State, which visits Maryland on Saturday. Here are five such players — all from D.C.-area high schools — who are in the lineup for the Bears:

RB Jourdan Brooks (Seneca Valley) » At Rutgers, the 6-1, 240-pound speedster was considered the heir apparent to Ray Rice. But Brooks’ playing time decreased as the Scarlet Knights got more production from Joe Martinek. It’s only natural that Brooks would end up at Morgan State. His father, Maurice, was an all-conference linebacker the last year the Bears won the MEAC title (1979).

DB Nico Scott (Eleanor Roosevelt) » The former ER quarterback started eight games at cornerback as a red shirt sophomore at Syracuse in 2008, but fell out of favor with a new regime last fall and moved to Morgan State.

DB Joe Rankin (Seneca Valley) » Had an offer from Army, but opted for Louisville. A year later, Rankin is at Morgan State. Less than three minutes into his first college game Saturday, Rankin intercepted a pass against Bowie State.

DE Justin Young (Northwest) » The 6-3, 285-pound junior defensive end began his college career at Virginia Tech. But after scant playing time as a redshirt freshman, he moved to Morgan last year. Young had a sack last week.

DE Zary Stewart (Douglass) » The 6-4, 260 junior defensive end had 35 tackles last year after transferring from Syracuse.
