Transfers leading the way for Colonials

Two newcomers to Foggy Bottom have paced the George Washington men’s and women’s basketball teams in the early going, and neither of them are freshmen.

The Colonials women boast four returning starters and 11 letter winners from last year’s Sweet 16 team. But it is Antelia Parrish, a junior transfer from Prince George’s Community College, who is leading the charge by averaging 17.5 points and nine rebounds per game — including her first double-double as a Colonial in Monday’s 70-68 win at Virginia.

Parrish, a 6-foot forward who played high school ball at McNamara, and senior guard Kimberly Beck also have combined to shoot 55 percent (15-for-27) from 3-point range.

Wynton Witherspoon, also a junior, has only had one game to show off his Atlantic Coast Conference pedigree, but the former Virginia Tech Hokie delivered his own double-double with 15 points and 11 boards in the men’s season-opening victory over Mount St. Mary’s.

The Wildcats (1-0) are coming off their program’s first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 1989-90 and 1990-91.

Sophomore Corey Lowe scored a career-high 28 points in the Terriers’ (1-0) season-opening win over St. Bonaventure.
