The NFL is supposed to be the league of parity. So how does it compare to other sports?
With the New York Giants’ victory Sunday, more than half of the Super Bowls have been won by five organizations — the Steelers, Cowboys, 49ers, Packers and Giants.
Out of the 107 World Series, the Yankees have won 27 — more than a quarter of them.
In the NBA, the Celtics and Lakers have combined to win more than half of the championships.
And in the NHL, the Canadiens, Maple Leafs and Red Wings have won 48 out of 86 Stanley Cups.
Despite the NFL’s claim of balance, the Giants’ victory reiterates that it’s still a league with dominant franchises. Fourteen teams have never won a Super Bowl.
Every year the league has surprises, like the Houston Texans making their first postseason appearance in franchise history this season.
But when it comes to winning it all, the league isn’t as balanced as it leads on.
