Olympic roundup: Ohno gets new sponsor; Beard has baby boy

Alaska Airlines sponsoring Apolo Ohno

SEATTLE – Alaska Airlines says it’s sponsoring short-track speed skater Apolo Ohno in his quest to win a sixth medal at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.

An airline spokesman, Paul McElroy, said Tuesday it’s not disclosing the amount of money involved. He says Alaska and Ohno are following strict Olympic rules about the sponsorship.

The Seattle-based airline is setting up a Web site (www.followapolo.com) to post exclusive content such as Ohno’s personal blog.

It’s a boy for US Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard

LOS ANGELES – It’s a boy for seven-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard.

The U.S. swimmer gave birth to her first child, Blaise Ray Brown, on Tuesday in Los Angeles. The boy weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces (3.5 kilograms).

“Mom is doing great!” her agent, Evan Morganstein, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

The 27-year-old swimmer and her husband, photographer Sacha Brown, were married in May off the coast of Indonesia.

Beard, a four-time Olympian, competed in the Beijing Games but failed to advance out of the preliminaries in the 200-meter breaststroke.
