Michael Phelps promised his swim coach he would be devoted to his sport until Aug. 17 — the date of his last swim. Now that the Olympics are finally over, Phelps can do something he hasn’t done in a while: have fun playing another sport.
A source in the Portugal embassy told The Examiner’s Jim Williams that Phelps is vacationing in Portugal with friends, where he’ll also play some golf.
The 23-year-old superstar swimmer is apparently staying in Portugal’s Algarve region, where he’ll hang out at the Hilton Vilamoura As Cascatas Resort & Spa. If anyone has earned a relaxing trip, it’s Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Olympics.
Phelps is also getting used to being a major celebrity. Apparently, the London tabloids are speculating on the identity of his girlfriend. Among those they’ve linked him with: U.S. swimmer Amanda Beard and British model Lily Donaldson.
Which leads to this question: if he is with either woman, would that qualify as a ninth gold medal?
