D.C.’s owner of Politics & Prose dies

Carla Cohen, a former city planner and the owner of the well-known Connecticut Avenue bookstore Politics and Prose, died Monday. She was 74.

Cohen opened the bookstore in 1984 with Barbara Meade. The shop became a city institution over the years and on the circuit for writers such as J.K. Rowling and John Updike. Political figures like President Jimmy Carter have also made appearances.

Cohen was diagnosed with cancer last fall, according to the Associated Press, and she and Meade agreed at that time to sell the store. Meade is still weighing the proposals the owners received and expects to announce a selection within a few months.

Politics and Prose is on Connecticut Avenue between Cleveland Park and Chevy Chase.

Cohen’s funeral will be held at Tifereth Israel, 7701 16th St. NW  at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
