Second half woes sink Navy vs. Ohio

Navy scored more than twice as many points in the second half compared to the first half Saturday against visiting Ohio.

But, the Bobcats still outscored the host-Midshipmen by 15 points over the final 20 minutes en route to an 81-52 win at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. Ohio scored 52 points in the second half and made 20-of-31 shots during that span, snapping Navy?s modest two-game winning streak in the process.

Guard Lauren Kohn scored a game-high 19 points, while guards Simone Redd Jennifer Poff had 15 and 12 points, respectively for Ohio (7-6). The Bobcats also finished the game shooting 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from three-point range.

Navy struggled most of the afternoon offensively as it shot just 29.1 percent from the field, and scored 14 points in the first half. The Midshipmen scored just six points over the final 12:05 of the first half and just one field goal ? a basket from freshman center Cassie Consedine ? in that time.

“Offensively we were bad in the first half, not good at all,” Navy coach Tom Marryott said. “Even with that, if we would have played some defense throughout this game, we would have been fine. We were hanging around there in the first half and then you get frustrated when your shots aren?t going, especially inside. But then in the second half, we had a complete letdown defensively.”

Navy scrapped by through much of the opening 20 minutes and trailed 19-14 following a pair of free throws by Consedine. But, Ohio closed out the opening 20 minutes on a 9-0 run.

Trailing 28-14 at halftime, Navy finally found some offensive consistency and trailed 40-28 with 14:37 left in the game following a layup and free throw by center Kelly Altschul. However, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run after that and the Midshipmen didn?t challenge the lead the rest of the way.

Consedine led Navy 15 points and 11 rebounds while guard Whitney Davidson had 11 points and four rebounds. Also, guard Kalen Kropa had 5 points and 5 assists and guard Angela Myers had 4 points, 5 assists and 7 rebounds for Navy (4-11). The Midshipmen open Patriot League play at 7 p.m. this coming Saturday when it hosts Bucknell.

“We started to pick it up offensively in the second half, but let up on defense and stopped talking to each other,” Navy guard K.C. Gordon said. “One of the great things about this team is the chemistry and how we all work together, but when we?re not talking, it leaves people open.”
