Schaefer shines in annual spring game

There are still three months until Towson opens pre-season camp, but quarterback Sean Schaefer was in mid-season form Saturday.

Schaefer completed 6-of-11 passes for 101 yards and three touchdowns as Towson?s offense defeated its defense, 38-18, in Saturday?s Black-Gold spring game at Unitas Stadium.

But he knows the team has some improvements to make before the Colonial Athletic Association season starts.

“We?ve just got to be consistent every time out there and put it all together,” Schaefer said. “Run the ball, throw the ball, protect. Every game is a battle. You have to bring you?re A game every week.”

While he?s quite familiar with the offense, Schaefer is adapting to a new role: team captain. Schaefer is the lone junior among the five captains, joining seniors Brian Bradford, Demetrius Harrison, Kenny Scott, and John Webb.

“At the quarterback position, you have to automatically be a leader,” Schaefer said. “As a captain, though, you have to be a leader of the whole team and step up and make decisions you usually wouldn?t have to make.”

The offense carried a 27-10 lead into halftime, having run a successful two-minute drill to end the frame. The second half was truncated into a “third period,” mainly because of injuries.

“We even had one in warm-ups. [Senior guard] Jeff Tyler pulled up because of his back,” Combs said. “We wound up getting about 60 plays in, so I felt good about that. Most of our work is done in the 14 practices leading up to this.”

Saturday?s game not only marked the culmination of spring practice, but the end of an era. Towson will no longer play on the aging, fading green turf that occupies the surface at Unitas Stadium.

“I?m not going to miss this turf,” Combs said. “It did what we needed it to for the last six or seven years and now we?re going to be able to have a new place to play on.”

Once the lacrosse season is complete, the Towson athletic department will install a new playing surface as part of an update on Unitas Stadium.

“It rips your skin to pieces,” Schaefer said. “I?m excited to get the new turf.”
