I m a pariah, McCain jokes

The pressures of the presidential campaign haven’t dampened John McCain’s dry, sardonic wit. Or perhaps the long hours and sleeplessness are just magnifying his famous sarcasm.

At a news conference Wednesday to receive the endorsement of the Republican House leadership, the Arizona senator was asked how his Senate colleagues have reacted to him since he returned from the campaign trail.

“They don’t speak to me,” he deadpanned. “I’m an outcast and a pariah.” He quickly made it clear that he was joking and emphasized that his “colleagues have welcomed me from both sides of the aisle.”

But when asked what he told his potential November opponent Sen. Barack Obama when the two recently ran into each other on the Senate floor.

McCain said he only offered his colleague a “Hello, I’m glad to see you.”

In introducing McCain, House Minority Whip Roy Blunt said, “I was privileged to have many friends in the presidential race and I still have one friend, Mike Huckabee, running. But I believe this race is over.”

“I appreciate the fact that Gov. Huckabee is still in this race,” McCain said of his opponent. “He is a man of integrity and he has every right to continue this race as long as he wants to.”

But he later noted that he’d like it if Huckabee dropped out “today.”
