Redskins radio a BIG improvement

I was able to do something that I have not been able to do for almost two years. I was able to listen to the Redskin radio team of Larry Michael, Hall of Famers Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff and sideline reporter Bram Weinstein on a local radio station — WBIG 100.3 FM, the flagship station for the Redskins radio network.

It was a treat to hear Michaels do a brilliant job of play by play while at the same time officiate the on going debates between Washington’s “Grumpy old men,” Jurgensen and Huff. It was great to hear Weinstein once again give his insightful and informative sideline reports.

The games on the Triple X ESPN group just did not reach enough of the Redskins audience and it made it very difficult for fans to turn down the national TV broadcast and listen to the home team.

Clearly that will not be the case this year as Big 100.3 has a monster signal that covers Redskins nation along with the entire Triple X ESPN family of stations. This gives the Redskins fans a network that they have been waiting for since the team left WJFK-FM.

That is a BIG and welcome improvement.

This week, the Redskins and the Steelers play at Fed Ex Field Saturday night and fans will be able to see the game locally on WUSA 9 and Comcast SportsNet. The telecast marks the debut of Brett Haber (WUSA 9 sports director) as part of the Redskins preseason broadcast team. He will serve as host and also do reports during the telecast.

The Redskins broadcast team will be filled out by Mike Patrick and Joe Theisman. That should be music to the ears of Redskins fans as the two popular local broadcasters return to call the remainder of the preseason games.

WUSA 9 will have an extensive pregame show before all of the remaining Redskins preseason games. Haber will host with former Redskin Brian Mitchell serving as the analyst. Levan Reid and Sara Walsh will also contribute features to the pre- and postgame shows. The live postgame shows will include highlights, live player interviews, analysis and coverage of Joe Gibbs’ press conference. We will have more on CSN coverage plans later this week.
