LNS vs. City Paper: The Fallout

The Washington City Paper’s latest cover story on LateNightShots.com, a social networking site popular with the Georgetown party set, has stiffened the Lacoste collars of LNS fans. For its part, the City Paper is hardly shaking in its denims. We got an update on the hostilities from the piece’s author, Angela Valdez, and LateNightShots.com founder Reed Landry.

Landry says that he doesn’t expect anything to change at LateNightShots in response to the piece, which claimed that LNS “is herding the next generation of [jerks] through Georgetown bars.”

“There’s actually been a spike in sign-ups and invites that have gone out,” Landry told Yeas & Nays. As for his opinion of Valdez’s piece, Landry said, “People recognize the [City Paper] piece for what it is: a lot of hyperbole and fairly overdone. Washington City Paper caters to somewhat of a fringe crowd and, frankly, with pieces like that, the more overdone they are, the easier it is to see for most people that it’s highly exaggerated.”

For her part, Valdez has seen plenty of reaction.

“They’ve posted my private phone number, and I’ve been getting a lot of hang-up calls,” Valdez said. “One guy was kind enough to make a farting noise.” In addition to the calls, Valdez says that “they’re trying to find out where I live. The posts [on LNS’ message boards] just spread a lot of untruths about me. I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s false and gossipy.”

Oh, and “one other thing,” Valdez tells us: “They’ve been sending me porn Web site registration e-mails.”
