Veteran coach starts anew

Who says you can?t teach an old dog new tricks?

After years at the helm of the C. Milton Wright softball team, Spike Updegrove has come out of retirement to lead the Mustang?s cross-county rivals, the Fallston Cougars.

He began at C. Milton Wright in 1980, and was one of the original 39 teachers, before leaving in 2004.

During that time, he claimed state titles in softball in 1981, 1982, 1984, and 1985. The most memorable finals appearance to him, however, came in 1983.

“Our pitcher pitches a no-hitter and we lose 1-0,” Updegrove said.

“I?ll take four out of five,” he said.

The Mustangs defeated their former skipper?s Cougars at Fallston on Wednesday, 7-6.
