IT WAS OVER WHEN …
The Orioles finished batting practice. The club set season highs in hits (22) and runs (16) in a single game. Every Orioles starter had at least one hit, and only Kevin Millar — who drew two walks — was held under two hits.
O’S FANS CHEERED …
At the three separate four-run innings the Orioles put together. The Orioles scored in six-of-nine innings, but the four-run first set the tone. Right out of the gate, Brian Roberts doubled, and Nick Markakis doubled him home. After two batters, the game was over.
O’S FANS JEERED …
When starter Garrett Olson was pulled in the second inning. The promising left-hander scattered four hits and three walks while allowing five runs. It marked the second time in his last three starts that Olson has failed to get through three innings.
FANTASY STUD …
Melvin Mora has been on fire for the entire second-half of the season, but Sunday, put up an incredible line in the box score against Detroit. Mora went 5-for-6 with six runs batted in and four runs scored. He hit two doubles and two home runs — he now has 20 — while upping his RBI total to 91.
GOOD CALL …
By manager Dave Trembley to go to his bench for two of his regulars Sunday afternoon. Leading by a substantial margin, Trembley found a brief rest for Brian Roberts and catcher Ramon Hernandez.
BAD CALL …
By Detroit to use Zach Miner, Casey Fossum, Aquilino Lopez and Francis Beltran. The Tigers first four pitchers of the day combined to go eight innings, scattering 21 hits and 16 runs. In comparison, Bobby Seay looked like Cy Young when he allowed one hit on 11 pitches in the ninth inning.
IF ONLY …
The Orioles pitching could catch up to the offense. While the Orioles sprayed 22 hits around Comerica Park, the Tigers weren’t exactly held silent. Detroit had 15 hits, and the Orioles needed four relievers to clean up Olson’s mess.
