Madison’s surprising girls soccer team will face its toughest opponent of the season without its star midfielder tonight when it meets undefeated Yorktown (7-0) at Gunston Middle School in a non-district battle.
The Warhawks (6-0) expect to be without midfielder Jaimie Kuykendall, who sprained her right ankle against Jefferson on April 4.
Still, it’s been a season filled with silver linings, as Madison’s aim to challenge for the Liberty District title has looked increasingly promising thanks to six straight shutouts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Rosales has excelled in the net and junior forward Devin Dowell has scored the only goal in three different 1-0 wins.
Madison coach Kurt Kuykendall also said while Jaimie, his daughter, has been on the sideline, things have taken a turn for the better for his son, Shawn Kuykendall, who was cut by D.C. United this spring but has been offered a tryout with Red Bull New York.
Should Shawn Kuykendall not earn a spot with the Red Bulls, he is planning to pursue playing opportunities in Sweden or Germany.
