From the soggy, and cool, morning practice:
Studs
FB Mike Sellers. Caught a few passes. But he also laid out Reed Doughty on a block coming around the end.
CB Fred Smoot. A better day than yesterday as he was involved in a few pass breakups. But he had trouble yesterday on deep balls. Today’s throws all were in front of him.
DE Brian Orakpo. Listen, the more we talk to people the more we hear the same thing: Can’t wait to see this kid. He did nothing spectacular today, but he did make a nice heady play on a rush where he sensed the QB unloading a quick pass and got his hands up. A small thing, but still savvy. Apparently there’s one question left about him: who will be his presenter in Canton? OK, we’re kidding. All I know is that he’d best not be another Taylor Jacobs, someone who looks good in practice and doesn’t play well. But if that’s the case a lot of people will have been fooled.
S Reed Doughty. Another interception, this time picking off a Jason Campbell pass to Chris Cooley.
QB Jason Campbell. But there’s a caveat: only on deep fades down the right side. He hit Santana Moss on one, Trent Shelton on another. The one to Moss was a perfect throw, over the top of the immortal Doug Dutch, right along the sideline.
C Casey Rabach. Did a nice job picking up the blitz and handling the interior, against the first D-Line, too.
TE Robbie Agnone. Made a couple nice grabs. A major longshot, but a good day for the kid.
WR Trent Shelton. Toasted Michael Grant on a deep ball. Caught the ball in bounds and his momentum took him out as he kept yelling, ‘Yes, sir! Yes, sir! Yes, sir!” So either he’s military or very excited.
Duds
RB Anthony Alridge. Puts the ball on the ground too much. Today he caught a nice pass from Todd Collins over Chris Horton. But Justin Tryon then came over and stripped him. It’s great to have speed, but he loses the ball too much.
WR Devin Thomas. Tried to go, but his hamstring kept him out of the majority of full-team drills. Gotta show he can stay healthy.
RT Jeremy Bridges. The daily winner. He had a few good moments where he picked up blitzes. But one negative stands out: his lunging block attempt of rush end Chris Wilson, and subsequent stumble as Wilson went past. That was about technique and speed and he failed in both.
LT Devin Clark. Buges loves him. But he loves all his guys. All we know is that Alex Buzbee got past him a couple times.
QB Jason Campbell. A good and bad day. Threw two picks, one to Kareem Moore and another to Doughty. On the Moore pick, it appeared that either Shelton or D.J. Hackett had run the wrong route. Both ended up in about the same area. Still, Campbell was late on the ill-advised pass.
