Woods uncertain about defending AT&T National crown

Today at a press conference from Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square, Pa., Tiger Woods announced that, due to injury, he was not sure that he would defend his title at the 2010 AT&T National, a PGA TOUR event held during the Fourth of July weekend that benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation.

If he is healthy, then playing at his tournament would be in his plans. That said, he has set no time table for his return — including the U.S. Open, which this year will be held at Pebble Beach, one of Tiger’s favorite courses.

Since it inception the AT&T National has been played at Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Md. However because Congressional will host the 2011 U.S. Open, the tournament was moved for two years to the Philadelphia area (it will be played at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa.). The event will return to the Nation’s Capital in 2012, with Tiger making it clear he wants the tournament to be based in the D.C. area.

Congressional is Tiger’s first choice and it is agreed the tournament will return there in 2012. However earlier this year Donald Trump, a personal friend of Tiger’s, made it clear to me in an interview that he is renovating The Trump National Golf Club in Potomac Falls, Va.

Once the course is finished he plans on pitching the location to Tiger.
