The Redskins aren’t worried about Santana Moss being suspended. At least not for now. But that still depends on whether the NFL agrees with their belief in Moss.
The Redskins receiver has been linked to Canadian doctor Anthony Galea, who was arrested and charged with smuggling and providing human growth hormone. Moss told several teammates that he received treatment from Galea but insisted he did not know anything about human growth hormones.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan spoke with Moss on Wednesday morning about the situation.
“I feel really good about where he was at and feel really good that, I don’t know if vindicated is the word, but when people find out the facts he’ll be OK,” Shanahan said.
When asked whether he worried about a suspension, Shanahan said, “No, I don’t.”
But he also said he has not talked to the league about the matter. Moss referred all comments about the situation to Shanahan but did say, “We went over everything and where we’re at. We’re very clear on our decision.”
He declined to elaborate on the situation, saying of it being a possible distraction, “I’m good. I’m just getting ready for the season.”
Defensive end Phillip Daniels said Moss told several teammates what happened last week after news first broke that a Redskins player was linked to Galea.
Moss’ teammates support him.
“He just said he got the treatments from him and that’s it,” Daniels said. “I believe he’s telling the truth. Who knows what happened after that or what he put into it. I don’t know all the details of that. But I feel he was telling us the truth. He was sincere with it. He said if he did something crazy, I don’t know.
“They stopped [Galea] at the border. Who knows who they were going to see. Maybe they were coming to give him another treatment. Maybe he was getting a treatment, and that’s what he thought he was getting. It’s kind of tough. But I believe in him. He’s always been a standup guy.”
Running back Clinton Portis, one of Moss’ closest friends on the team, said, “I don’t know nothing about that, man. I think Santana’s a great guy. In time it’ll show. It pains me to see anybody go through anything. … To me, I keep my mouth shut. The truth will come out in time.”
Meanwhile, Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is a target in a lawsuit, in which an exotic dancer from New York said he impregnated and then abandoned her, according to the New York Post. The lawsuit reportedly is for $10 million.
