Snyder believes in plan

The Redskins have had quiet offseasons in the past under Dan Snyder. But it’s rare for it to happen in the first year with a new coach. So, in some ways, this quiet first week represented a departure for Snyder.

Not that general manager Bruce Allen or coach Mike Shanahan had to convince him of this approach.

“No, they didn’t have to sell anybody,” said Snyder, before ducking into Morton’s Restaurant for the Redskins Charitable Foundation Annual Dinner. “It’s not about the past now. It’s about the future and when you look at the pedigree of Bruce and Mike and everything they’re doing, and their experience, we’re in good hands.”

The Redskins have signed just three players thus far, including journeyman tight end Sean Ryan on Thursday. None are considered a big name. Running back Larry Johnson will meet with Shanahan on Friday.

“I like Larry; I’m a big fan of his,” Shanahan said. “We’ll get a chance to spend some time with him and let the proces stake care of itself.”

Running back Willie Parker visited earlier this week.

“This is an ongoing process,” Shanahan said. “You won’t come in after the first four days of free agency and say, ‘Hey, we’re done.’ It’s a long process and it won’t happen overnight….I’m very satisfied. We have a plan and we’ll stick by it… If it doesn’t work out, it won’t work out for a reason. There are a lot of areas we’ll address through the draft.”

Shanahan said he wasn’t sure when newly-signed nose guard Ma’ake Kemoeatu will be ready after missing last season with a torn Achilles’ tendon.

“By the time we start the season, hopefully he’ll be ready to go,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Redskins begin their offseason workout program Monday. Shanahan expects running back Clinton Portis, cleared to participate after missing the final eight games with a concussion, to attend.

“I guarantee Clinton will be there,” he said. “I know Clinton too well. He’ll kick off the offseason on the right note. I want my leaders to be there. I anticipate everyone being there….What’s really important is the team. You put the team first.”

Everyone as in defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and corner Carlos Rogers, who according to the NFL Network requested a trade. However, Shanahan met with Rogers and said they had a “great conversation.”

“I’m a big fan of Carlos,” Shanahan said.
