Sorensen returns to role

Before the season started, Nick Sorensen sweated out the final cuts — an annual tradition for him. For the fourth straight season, he had nothing to worry about. That doesn’t mean he won’t feel the same way next summer.

“When you’re not drafted, you feel that way [fighting for a roster spot] all the time,” Sorensen told the Florida Times-Union.

But, in his sixth season, the Marshall High and Virginia Tech graduate has become a key player for Jacksonville, having been named special teams captain.

In truth, though, Sorensen had a good reason to wonder about his future in Jacksonville. He missed the last six games of 2005 because of a broken ankle. And Sorensen wasn’t sure how he would respond this summer. But he responded well, despite tearing some scar tissue in his ankle.

Sorensen has carved out a nice niche for himself in the NFL. He spent two seasons with the St. Louis Rams before being released. He signed with Jacksonville in 2003, leading the Jaguars in special teams tackles that season.

“Since Nick has been here he’s been a solid contributor to our special teams,” Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said. “He’s intelligent and instinctive and productive for us. We definitely missed him when we didn’t have him.”
