Although you wouldn’t expect a liberal senator to attend a conservative newspaper’s birthday party, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., shocked the masses by RSVPing “Yes” to the Washington Times’ 25th Anniversary Gala on Thursday. President George H.W. Bush considered Kerry’s appearance such a classy gesture (after all, the Times’ editorial page dogged Kerry throughout his 2004 presidential run) that he even singled out the senator during his speech, saying he thought well of both the paper for inviting him and Kerry for showing up. But, alas, the Massachusetts senator never showed up, opting for a friendlier crowd at the fifth annual Religious Liberty Dinner on Capitol Hill.
