Donovan McNabb contradicted some of what offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said today, saying that he did not hear anyone tell him he could be benched during the game if he was struggling physically. Shanahan told reporters that was part of their conversation with him early in the week.
But McNabb, speaking on his weekly paid radio appearance with ESPN 980, said, “We had a conversation of the injuries that I have, bein ga little banged up and of wanting to rest up for the long haul or letting the injuries heal more, but I didn’t hear the word benching or anythign to that effect.”

McNabb also refuted a report by ESPN’s Chris Mortenson as well as comments by former Eagles practice squad QB Tim Hasselbeck.
The report questioned his work ethic as well as his tempo in practice and games.
“I haven’t heard anything to that effect,” McNabb told hosts Thom Loverro and Kevin Sheehan. “That is news to me. My practice tempo has always been the same, to get the guys and rally to go run the play and make sure you do it effectively. There’s nothing more I can say to that. Maybe I should run up to the line, I don’t know. That’s a new one.”
He also said no one has talked to him about his supposed bad habits. “I haven’t heard anything to that effect. That’s new. This is a time where everyone starts to dig deep and starts bringing up stuff that they’ve heard or sources say.”
He also said there’s “100 percent chance” he will sign an extension with Washington. However, he also said, “If I say 75 or 60 percent, there’d be another story.”
Earlier today, McNabb spoke with the media for four minutes today before cutting off questions.
McNabb on:
Whether his injuries were legitimate and hampered him in the game: “You have to play. There’s a difference being hurt and injured. And my team relies on me to be there. I want to be there for my team and if I can’t walk then I can’t go. That’s just the way I play. No matter if you’re banged up or what you have to be in there. Coach makes the decision. I can only say how I feel and what I feel is best for me.”
On if he’s surprised that Mike Shanahan said Sunday it was about terminology and Monday that it was for physical reasons: “Again, coach makes the decision. I don’t know what answers you guys are looking for. He makes the decision. I can only say what I think is best for my health and my situation and for my team.”
On if he could have finished the game: “Yeah, yeah.”
On questions about his tempo and work ethic: “Well you can ask these guys how I work and my work ethic. My work ethic has never been a question. My tempo has never been a question. There’ss a lot of digging going on right now, miscellaneous digging. When situations happen like this people start to reach for stuff that’s not there. It’s really not a question to even answer. There’s nothing more I can say.”
On if it’s insulting after so many years in the league that he has to answer these questions: “Absolutely. But it’s part of the job. That’s why I’m standing here right now, to give you guys a little bit because I know you guys probably are wondering how I felt. But I’m gonna make myself available when I need to. That’s my job. But I’ll focus on what we need to do here as a unit. There’s a lot of things we can clean up and with this bye week I expect big things when we get back.”
On if he’ll now be looking over his shoulder in late-game situations: “That’s not the way I play. I think if you begin to wonder and you have concerns then it takes you away from what you want to accomplish. We have high goals here. I will make sure I ttry to do my job to achieve those goals.”
On if he’d want to be told ahead of time that he could be pulled: “No, because why go into the game with any more things on your mind. That’s like you guys writing a great article and your employer says I’m not going to put it in and then you say why didn’t you tell me, then I wouldn’t have wasted my time. I have a job to do and I try to do it to the fullest.”
On his relationship with Kyle: “Great relationship. Did you see us walking together? We were skipping and holding hands. No, Kyle and I are great. A work in progress, we’re both enjoying this moment and we’ll make sure we take full advantage.”
On if the locker room support he has means something: “Absotlutley. In the locker room it’s a family.”
