Kelly’s return stopped short

Wide receiver tweaks left hamstring again

ASHBURN – Malcolm Kelly tried to return. Once again, his hamstring wouldn’t cooperate. And now his future in Washington is in serious jeopardy.

The Redskins receiver re-injured his left hamstring early in practice Monday as he was trying to come back from a three-and-a-half week absence.

“It looks like a serious pull,” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said.

Kelly first injured the hamstring a few days before training camp when he participated in Donovan McNabb’s Hell Week in Arizona. He said he did not stretch well enough after flying across country that day.

He practiced on July 29, the first day of camp, but has not taken part in a full workout since. Kelly has undergone an MRI and received a second opinion.

“Obviously it must be a lot worse than we thought,” Shanahan said.

Kelly missed time last summer with a slight hamstring pull, but did appear in all 16 games and caught 25 passes. As a rookie, he was sidelined for most of training camp with a knee injury and appeared in only five games. He has 28 catches in his first two seasons.

But now he faces going on injured reserve or being cut. He is not eligible for the physically unable to perform list.

“I’ve had people who have injuries for three or four years before they get their opportunity,” Shanahan said. “They’re pretty unlucky and all of a sudden they have a good career. … Some guys unfortunately have that injury they just can’t overcome and Malcolm has to deal with that now.”
