Shear madness for Cougars

Maybe if Fallston High wins the boys lacrosse state tournament, Matt Parks will shave his head completely.

After his Cougars (12-0 entering the week) pitched a shutout against North Harford this season, Parks lived up to his promise by sporting a Mohawk throughout the remainder of the regular season.

“It?s looking good. I?ve got to keep it another day,” Parks said Monday before his Cougars faced Hereford. “I told them I?d keep it until the end of the regular season.”

That lasts through today?s game with Francis Scott Key, but just like his feelings towards his Mohawk, Parks has to like Fallston?s chances as making a run at the Class 3A-2A North Region title. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held itsplayoff draw Monday, and the Cougars earned the region?s top seed. They will play the winner of a first-round game between eighth-seeded Franklin and No. 9 Towson.

“[Being the No. 1 seed is] always a good thing, especially in a region that has 13 or 14 teams,” Parks said. “You like to get that first-round bye and get a scout on that first game.”

4A-3A

Will it be Dulaney or Severna Park? It?s tough to overlook the other 41 teams in the 4A-3A brackets, but since 1999, either the Lions or Falcons have won the state title. It?s possible the two could meet ? with Dulaney as the No. 1 seed in the South Region and Severna Park the No. 2 seed in the East.

3A-2A

While Fallston enters as a No. 1 seed in the North Region, Centennial has a shot to run the table as a No. 1 seed in the South. The Eagles have won two titles in the last three seasons, but Mount Hebron disrupted that streak with a state title last year. The Vikings, a No. 4 seed in the South, will host Howard in the first round.

2A-1A

Sparrows Point, Edmondson and Winters Mill were among the local teams to earn No. 1 seeds in their regions. Defending state champion Loch Raven is the No. 4 seed in the 2A-1A North. Winters Mill, which enters the week 13-0, will face the winner of Liberty-North Hagerstown. Sparrows Point, which is also riding high at 11-0, will see 16th seed Reginald Lewis in the first round.
